Last week while vacationing in TN, my family and I went to the cemetery. We visited my dad’s grave and the burial sites of many other family members on his side of the family. I noticed the grave of a distant relative who has a wife buried on either side. As I have done on many occasions,I stopped in front of this headstone and contemplated this mans current situation. I use to wonder how is he getting along in heaven? I wondered which woman is his wife in heaven and how does the other one feel about that? Which one does he live with or do they all live together? I also wondered how the wives reacted in Heaven when the second one passed and showed up at the door. Are they jealous of each other? Do they fight and argue? Which one does he spend more time with? Is this poor man miserable?
I have since learned that relationships will not be the same in Heaven as they are on Earth. Jesus said that life in the world to come won’t include marriage as we know it now. “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.” Matthew 22:30
We know that we will be reunited with our loved ones in Heaven, we just don’t know exactly what form that togetherness will take. But we can be sure that it won’t be less than what it is on earth. Instead we can expect something better, something far more fulfilling and satisfying that we can even imagine. That’s exciting.
But I do still wonder about the housing situation. Do we all get our own house or will we have separate rooms in a shared mansion? Can we pick our roommates? Who are the babies living with? Can I pick up the babies I know and take them to live with me? The only thing I know for sure is Jesus has prepared a place for everyone who accepts Him as their Savior. John 14:2 tells us "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." And that is also very exciting.
