Church Isn't For Perfect People

I have unfriended and unfollowed a few people on Facebook over the last couple of months. Not because I don’t think we are all entitled to our own opinion, but some posts have been ridiculously offensive and unnecessary. I don’t welcome toxic relationships, even virtual ones. But I can scroll right on by most of them. There is one that I found only mildly offensive yet I can’t get it off my mind. It was of a nicely dressed middle aged lady smiling from her car window and the caption read Church is over… Time to go be a b* to some poor food worker for telling me to wear a face mask. I have spent way too much time thinking about it, obviously. I won’t debate the mask issue. I wear one when it is required because I am a peacemaker, not a rulebreaker. But I have been trying to understand why it was directed at Christians. I’m trying to entertain the point of view. I have wondered if this is how I’m seen. I’m glad the meme writers don’t ride with me while I drive. It was a reminder to me to always try to speak and act with love.

People are disengaging from Christianity, not due to the message, but due to the messenger. It’s true that we fall short and make mistakes. It may also be true that the devil will attack us a little harder to try and keep us from being a good witness. This is when we need to remember James 4:7 Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee. As I turned in my bible to find that verse, I came across another verse that speaks clearly to us. 1 Corinthians 15:34 Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God. Christians should strive to be a walking testimony and be a witness without saying a word. If we go out there and really live right, people should see the favor on our life and ask us for the answers. It seems people actually are watching.

If you avoid church because you consider Christians to be hypocrites, you are doing yourself a great injustice. You don’t avoid Wal-Mart or the grocery store because of the hypocrites there. You don’t avoid the highways because of the hypocrites there. Church isn’t for perfect people. If it was, the seats would always be empty. It is for sinners, saved by grace, not works. Don’t let someone else be the reason you don’t accept Jesus. At the end of time, you won’t be asked about me or anyone else. Each of us will only answer for our own choices.
